World Series MVP

Closer Hugh Casey was named by the baseball writers the MVP of the 1946 World Series. It is unusual for a relief pitcher to be named Series MVP, but Casey had a very unusual series.

Casey won games 3 and 6 as well as collecting a save in game 4, but his most notable achievement came with a bat in his hand. With 2 outs in the top of the tenth of a tied game 3, Casey was sent up to hit with no Dodger position player left on the bench. Casey was a career .181 hitter who had not even had an at bat all year long. But following the maxim "swing hard in case you hit it" Casey connected with a fastball and lifted it over the Green Monster in left, setting off wild celebrations in Brooklyn and mass disbelief through the rest of the country. Casey then composed himself enough to get through the bottom half of the frame to secure the victory and the momentum in the series.
